What is the Victorian Curriculum?
The Victorian Curriculum F–10 is the mandated curriculum for Victorian schools, developed and maintained by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA). It sets out what students are expected to learn from Foundation to Year 10 across eight learning areas and four general capabilities.
Version 2.0, released in 2023, is a significant update that revises content descriptions and achievement standards across all learning areas to better reflect contemporary knowledge and skills. It aligns more closely with the Australian Curriculum v9 while retaining Victorian-specific priorities and terminology. Victorian schools are implementing Version 2.0 from 2025 onwards.
The four general capabilities — Critical and Creative Thinking, Personal and Social Capability, Intercultural Capability, and Ethical Capability — are embedded across all learning areas, not taught as separate subjects.
Learning areas in the Victorian Curriculum
Victorian schools teach eight learning areas from Foundation to Year 10, with an increasing range of elective subjects from Year 9 onwards.
English
Reading and Viewing, Writing, Speaking and Listening across all year levels. The Victorian Curriculum 2.0 emphasises language, literature, and literacy in integrated and explicit ways.
Mathematics
Number, Algebra, Measurement, Space, Statistics, and Probability. Version 2.0 strengthens the progression of concepts and introduces clearer achievement standards at each level.
Science
Science Understanding and Science Inquiry Skills. Covers Physical, Chemical, Earth and Space, and Biological Sciences from Foundation to Year 10.
Humanities
History, Geography, Civics and Citizenship, and Economics and Business. In Victorian schools, Humanities is taught as a combined subject in primary and splits into separate disciplines at secondary level.
The Arts
Dance, Drama, Media Arts, Music, and Visual Arts. Students engage with each art form across the primary years, with specialisation options at secondary level.
Technologies
Design and Technologies and Digital Technologies. Covers design thinking, engineering principles, digital systems, and data and coding from Foundation to Year 10.
Health and Physical Education
Personal, social, and community health alongside movement and physical activity. Includes a focus on respectful relationships and health literacy.
Languages
A mandatory Languages component across the primary years. Common Victorian school languages include Japanese, Italian, Chinese, French, Indonesian, and German.
