NAPLAN Marking Criteria
Audience
Writing is oriented to the reader with appropriate tone and register for the text type.
Text Structure
The writing has a clear and complete structure — orientation, complication and resolution for narrative; introduction, arguments and conclusion for persuasive.
Ideas
Content is relevant, elaborated and shows insight. Narrative ideas are imaginative; persuasive ideas are convincing.
Vocabulary
Words are chosen deliberately to enhance meaning. Varied, precise, and contextually appropriate.
Cohesion
Paragraphs are logically sequenced. Ideas connect clearly within and across paragraphs.
Sentence Structure
Sentences are grammatically correct and varied in structure and length.
Punctuation
Punctuation is used accurately to aid meaning — full stops, commas, apostrophes, speech marks.
Spelling
Common and topic-specific words are spelled correctly. Sophisticated vocabulary attempts are rewarded even with minor errors.
