Geographical information of Africa

This comprehensive unit introduces Year 4 students to the vast and diverse continent of Africa, aligning with the Australian Curriculum (v9) for HASS in Western Australia. Over one intensive week, students will embark on a geographical exploration, developing their understanding of Africa's location, major physical features, and key countries. The unit will foster geographical literacy by engaging students in activities that involve identifying and mapping significant landmarks, such as the Sahara Desert, the Nile River, and Mount Kilimanjaro. Students will also delve into the varied environments found across Africa, from arid deserts to lush rainforests and expansive savannahs, examining their importance to both unique wildlife and human populations. A key aspect of the unit will be to recognise the immense cultural diversity within Africa, understanding how people belong to various groups that shape their identities. Through hands-on map work, visual resources, and collaborative tasks, students will enhance their spatial reasoning skills, learn to interpret geographical information, and cultivate an appreciation for the interconnectedness of our global community. They will practise using essential geographical tools like maps and globes to locate places and describe their characteristics.
