This unit of work explores the early settlement of Sydney Cove, focusing on the experiences of the First Fleet and the immediate impact on the local Aboriginal community. Students will investigate the reasons for the journey, the conditions on the ships, and the challenges faced by both the convicts and the British authorities upon arrival in 1788. By examining primary and secondary sources, students will develop a historical understanding of how the arrival of the British changed the landscape and the lives of those living there. The unit emphasizes the dual perspective of early settlement, acknowledging the British perspective of 'discovery' and 'colonisation' alongside the Aboriginal Peoples' experience of displacement and the ongoing significance of Country. Students will use historical inquiry skills to analyse evidence and explain how life in the Sydney Cove penal settlement differed from life in Britain, while considering the geographical factors that influenced the location of the settlement.
